ANZAC 100 Commemoration

On Friday 24 April, we gathered together for an ANZAC Commemoration,  remembering the soldiers and nurses (and animals) killed and injured in WWI. A number of our students participated: drumming (Bryn) laying wreaths (Georgia and Kaelin also Phoenix and Grayson), lowering and raising the flag (Summer) speaking (Taulanga, Pipiana, Charlie, Beth-Anne, Helen, Aaliyah and Marcelle).

We were fortunate in having three guest speakers attend from Pt Chevalier RSA, Terry, Trisha and Matt as well as Terry Prince who played 'The Last Post' and 'Reveille' on the bugle. Our special thanks to our visitors for their contribution; they indicated that they would like to return for ANZAC Day in 2016, re-introducing an Edendale tradition from long ago.

The Ministry of Education provided each school in NZ with thirty named remembrance crosses for the memorial garden (for the event).

We have the following memorials to soldiers of WW1 and WW2 at Edendale; the oak tree planted in memory of Arthur Hannah, a foundation teacher at Edendale killed early on in WW1, the memorial columns at the front of the school, a WW1 Roll of Honour (wooden plaque) in the foyer hallway and  the more recent poppy mural (painted by our students) on the exterior staffroom wall. We also have a display of poppies made by our students for the 2015 occasion in the foyer cabinet adjacent to the staffroom.

Our thanks to Annette, Kusam and Emma for their preparation and organisation for this event.
